Information For Authors

go to topScope

IEEE Transactions on Industrial Informatics focuses on knowledge-based factory automation as a means to enhance industrial fabrication and manufacturing processes. This embraces a collection of techniques that use information analysis, manipulation, and distribution to achieve higher efficiency, effectiveness, reliability, and/or security within the industrial environment. The scope of the Transaction includes reporting, defining, providing a forum for discourse, and informing its readers about the latest developments in intelligent and computer control systems, robotics, factory communications and automation, flexible manufacturing, vision systems, and data acquisition and signal processing.

go to topManuscript Types

Three type of manuscript are accepted:

* Special Section papers must adhere to the same page limits as Regular Papers and Letters to the Editor.

go to topManuscript Style

Manuscript authors are expected to meet the highest standards of writing quality and adhere to the following guidelines:

  1. Use a clear, easy-to-follow outline.
  2. Use first-order, second-order, and third-order headings to assist the reader in following the presentation.
  3. Write in the third person. (DO NOT USE FIRST PERSON!)
  4. Define all acronyms on first use.

go to topManuscript Submission for Review

The Industrial Electronics Society is now employing a web-based manuscript submission and peer review tracking system called Manuscript Central. Authors must submit their manuscript electronically on the web to http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/tii/. From this entry page, access can be obtained to all information required for the submission of a manuscript. The main page of the site contains icons entitled "Create a New Account" and "Instructions and Forms". These two icons should be activated during the first entry to the site. Activation of the "Create a New Account" icon provides information about how to gain site access after a manuscript has been submitted. The "Instructions and Forms" icon opens a page that presents new icons. An icon entitled "Submission Instruction" provides an overview of the submission process which indicates that the submission process requires that manuscripts be submitted as a PDF document. Each page of Manuscript Central contains a "Get Support Now" button that can be activated if difficulty is encountered during the submission process.

Please note: The name assigned to the manuscript file must contain only letters and numbers. DO NOT use non-alphanumeric characters or spaces in the file name. Manuscript Central does not read files that contain non-alphanumeric characters and/or spaces in a file name.

All authors are responsible for understanding these guidelines before submitting their manuscript.

go to topManuscript Specification

Illustrations and Photos

All illustrations must be cited in text and have numbers and captions. Graphs should show only the coordinate axes (or at most the major grid lines) to avoid a dense, hard-to-read illustration. The illustration should be readable at two columns' width (114mm or 4.5 inches). Submit photocopies for the initial manuscript review. Original illustrations should be submitted with the final accepted version. If you have screen shots, please submit them in electronic format (.EPS, Sun PS, TIFF, .PCX, MacPaint, Pict, Windows .BMP, or GEM.IMG). Color photographs should be submitted as slides or transparencies or as TIFF files. Black-and-white prints should be glossy, have good contrast, and measure at least 7*10 cm (3 by 5 inches). Color illustrations will usually be reproduced in black and white unless author(s) agrees to pay an extra charge (depending on the number of figures) starting from US$ 1045.

References

It should appear in a separate section at the end of the paper. References should be contemporary, relevant, and essential. Citations in text are indicated by Arabic superscripts at the end of the author(s) name(s), numbered according to the order of citation. A referenced paper should contain all authors' names, title of the papers, name of the publication, volume and number, month and year of publication, and inclusive page numbers. A referenced book should list author name(s), title of the book, publisher, place of publication, year of publication, and specific chapters or pages cited. For example:

In general, references should be publicly available, such as papers in standard journals and open conference proceedings. Avoid using internal technical reports and theses unless they are easily accessible. Please check that also recent papers from the IEEE Transactions on Industrial Informatics scope are in your list of references.

Biography

Manuscripts accepted for publication should be accompanied by a brief biographical sketch. Biographical information should be stated in the following order: current position, prior significant professional experience, technical interests, education, awards and important activities, and professional affiliations.

Membership status

Please indicate in your cover letter whether you are a member of: 1) IEEE, 2) Industrial Electronics Society, or 3) neither of the above.

go to topReview Process

The review process includes seven steps:

  1. When a manuscript is received on Manuscript Central, the Journal Administrator (JA) is automatically notified by electronic mail.
  2. The JA ensures that manuscript documentation has been completed and notifies the Editor-in-Chief (EIC) that the manuscript is ready for assignment.
  3. The EIC ensures that the manuscript appears to be appropriate for publication in the Transactions and assigns the manuscript to a subject-matter Associate Editor (AE) that will be responsible for conducting the peer review of the manuscript.
  4. The AE then selects a minimum of three subject-matter experts to review the manuscript and initiates the review process.
  5. Upon completion of manuscript review, each reviewer completes two detailed evaluations - one for the editorial leadership and one for the author(s).
  6. When all reviews are completed, the AE collects review comments, coordinates the comments, drafts a recommendation based upon reviewer recommendations and personal evaluation of the manuscript, and forwards the recommendation to the EIC for final editorial decision.
  7. The EIC reviews the recommendation along with reviewer comments, arrives at a final decision, and notifies the Corresponding Author (the author that submitted the manuscript for review) of the results of the review.

go to topManuscript Decisions

Manuscript evaluations are assigned one of four outcomes: Accept, Minor Revisions, Major Revisions, and Reject. Clearly, the review process results in an extremely low percentage of submitted manuscripts receiving an "Accept" evaluation on the first review. Most manuscripts require revision! Manuscripts requiring "Minor Revision" may or may not require a second review. The nature of the required revision(s) will be the determining factor. All manuscripts receiving a "Major Revision" evaluation must be subjected to a second review. Where possible, the same AE and reviewers will be used to accomplish the second review to ensure consistency between the initial review and the second review. Rejected manuscripts are given no further consideration.

Normally, manuscripts that receive a "Major Revision" decision are only give one additional review. If the author(s) failed to make satisfactory changes in the manuscript, the manuscript is rejected. Only in extremely rare cases is a manuscript allowed to receive a third review.

go to topReview and Editing

After a manuscript has been refereed, and the author has been notified of acceptance by the Editor-in-Chief, staff of professional editors help the author turn the manuscript into a concise, well-worded magazine paper. This process includes copy editing (grammar, punctuation, and capitalization), style editing (conformity to Industrial Electronics Society house style), and content editing (flow, meaning, clarity, directness, and organization).

go to topSubmission of Final Manuscript

After a manuscript will be accepted, for the final production please send to the Editor-in-Chief following items:

  1. Two printed copies of the peer approved version without embedding figures, tables, and captions in the text; please make sure that all changes made to the paper version are incorporated into the electronic version.
  2. References in a separate section at the end of the text. (Please check that also recent papers from the IEEE Transactions on Industrial Electronics scope are your reference list).
  3. One copy of original figures and tables each printed on separate sheet.
  4. One copy of list of figure captions and tables.
  5. The authors' biographies.
  6. One photo of each author with the authors' name written on the reverse side.
  7. IEEE Copyright Form signed by an authorized author.
  8. CD disc conforming to the Electronic Form requirements

Electronic Form

The Transactions Department will need to receive your manuscript (and 2 paper copies) in the electronic format as follows:

  1. The text in the native format of the word processor software used to create it. DO NOT send postscript "ps" or "pdf" files of the text. Note the operating system, word processor software, and version number used to create your disk. Write this information on the disk label with a felt pen (e.g. Windows 2000/Microsft Word).
  2. Files should be submitted on CD disc.
  3. Check that your files are complete and include: the abstract, key words, text, references, footnotes, biographies and figure captions.
  4. Do not import graphics files in your text file.
  5. Make sure your files are self contained, i.e. that there are no pointers to your system set-up.
  6. Package CD disc to protect them in mailing.
  7. Use TeX, LaTeX, or Troff programs for the most accurate and efficient transfer of your manuscript, especially for those containing extensive mathematics. Include macros used with files. An IEEE LaTeX style file can be obtained by e-mailing help@ep.ieee.org. Manuscripts developed using the Work Perfect or Word programs are acceptable, but the mathematics will be re-keyed into a TeX format at IEEE.
  8. For more details in electronic submission see also: http://www.ieee.org/organizations/pubs/authors.html

go to topPage Charges

Mandatory Overlength Page Charges

The regular paper page length limit is defined at 8 formatted Transactions pages, including illustrations, references and author(s) biographies. Pages nine and above are charged US$160 per page and payment is a prerequisite for publication. Authors will be notified of any assessed charges when galley proofs are sent for review. However, authors are urged to take it into account when submitting and revising their paper.

Page Charges

After a paper has been accepted, the author's organization will be requested to pay $ 110 per printed page to cover part of the publication cost. The page charges are not obligatory nor is their payment a prerequisite for publication. The author will receive 100 reprints without covers if the page charge is honored. Detailed guidelines on page charges will accompany the galley proofs.

go to topSubmission Policy and Copyright

All manuscripts submitted for publication should be original. Manuscripts published or under consideration for publication elsewhere will not be considered. Manuscripts published in conference proceedings with limited circulation may be considered for publication in IEEE Transactions on Industrial Electronics if they are exceptionally important or contain substantial new results.

It is the policy of IEEE to own the copyright to the technical contributions it publishes. To comply with the U.S. Copyright Law, authors are required to sign an IEEE copyright transfer form (http://www.ieee.org/copyright/) before publication. This form returns to authors and their employer full rights to reuse their material for their own purposes.

go to topClosing Comment

Authors should remember that, with the exception of the JA, all members of the Editorial Board are volunteers having employment making significant time demands. Service activities for IEEE must, by nature, not be a first priority. Therefore, authors should understand if the time period between submission and decision is longer than desired.
