Industry Forum 2015

Industry Forum is a successful IES program integrating the Industry driven technology sessions within IEEE IES sponsored conferences and offering conference attendees perspectives of industry must directions and challenges that need to be faced every day.  Successes include events where industry found engagements with other industries where they shared a common technology need.  Another example is where a researcher was studying a power delivery problem that matched the need presented by an industry group and they are working together.  Other societies are duplicating our model and we are expanding into wider opportunity events for industry and IEEE to work together.  

 

ICIT 2015 (March, Seville, Spain)

Industry Forum sessions

  • Aerospace Electronics – This session is focused on current and future trends in avionics, navigation systems and electrical architectures for new aircraft. The aerospace industry is developing the More Electric Aircraft (MEA) concept for replacing mechanical, pneumatic and hydraulic systems by electrical systems electronically controlled. Significant presentations on these topics were made by D. Izquierdo of AIRBUS, F. Navarro of BOEING R&D Europe, E. Bas of INDRA and S. Ramiro of SKYLIFE ENGINEERING, all of Spain.  This session was chaired by Maria Angeles Martin of University of Seville, Spain.
  • Power and Energy Systems - The demand for advanced Industrial Electronics and Informatics solutions is growing in the power industry satisfying Smart Grids requirements and needs. This session examines challenges and trends dealing with industrial electronics, power electronics, information, and communication technology, energy management systems, power utility automation, smart consumers & loads (intelligent buildings, storage, etc.) and the integration of renewables into the future energy grids.  By far the largest contribution to the Industry Forum, a total of 9 presentations were made on such critical topics on Smart Grids technologies, control systems, standardization, IT and Big Data applications.  Presentations were by speakers from ORMAZABAL, CONCAR, CISCO, GPTECH, DEWETRON, OPAL-RT, OFFIS, ISOTROL, SAP, WIN INERTIA.  The 2 sessions in this series were both chaired by Thomas Strasser of the Austrian Institute of Technology
  • Vehicle Electrification – Vehicles are far more complex in the electrical areas such as and including electric motor power, infotainment, autonomous control and the role of electrification in urban mobility. This session examines the technologies needed to realize products in this area and observes areas where research could contribute value to the overall transportation ecosystem.   Here, F. J. L. Rojo of ENDESA, Spain explained “Towards an Intelligent e-Mobility”, L. Neckermann, a STRATEGIC CONSULTANT and AUTHOR on EVs, discussed “Emerging Business Models for the Mobility Revolution”, and D. Laval of the BOLLORÉ Group covered EVs and Charging Infrastructure together with Bolloré’s return experience to Paris and London.   This session was chaired by Victor Huang of Better World.

 

INDIN 2015 (July, Cambridge, UK)

At INDIN we held 12-panel members from industry & academia panel addressing 3 primary topics:

  • Security Challenges in Industrial Internet of Things
  • Cyber-physical Systems in Industrial Environments
  • Smart Buildings/Smart Grids/Smart Cities

The discussion was set as a keynote session and the attendees engaged with the panel.

 

IECON 2015 (November, Yokohama, Japan)

An Industry session and an Industry Executive Panel session focused on key IEEE IES technology areas of interest to IES members.

  • Vehicle Electrification: Scoping multiple issues surrounding vehicle electrification and transportation electrification in general including power needs, control, and informatics required to enable products in this area.
  • Robotics: A critical technology for Japan and the rest of the world with growth in robots capabilities from service robots to surgery and manufacturing assistance.

In the Industry session, Dr. H. Inoue, of Toyota Motor Corp presented “Driving Intelligence for Safer Automobiles” and Dr. K. Yokoyama of Yaskawa Electric Corporation expounded on “Activity of Yaskawa for Industrial Robots”.  The Executive Panel featured four exciting speakers/panelists who gave short talks on “Automobiles and Security” by M. Neumann, Intel Automotive Division; “Challenge in Information and Control Systems” by T. Hotta, Hitachi Ltd, Infrastructure Systems; “Electric Vehicle Battery Technology and Systems” by James Wang, 3C-KBS Inc.; and “Robotics with goal for ‘Mobility for All’” by A. Tamaoki, GM, Robotics Division, Toyota Motor Corporation.  A very lively 30-minute Panel discussion and Q&A with the participating audience took place. These sessions were chaired by M. Condry of Intel and Victor Huang of Better World/ZAP Motor Co.
